Philosophy of consciousness

Mainstream approaches generally begin from the dependence of human consciousness on brain activity and pursue explanations in neural, computational, psychological, functional, or representational terms. They differ over which mechanisms matter and whether current methods can bridge the gap between objective processes and subjective experience, but they treat empirical investigation and theory comparison as central.

• Neuroscience is relevant because conscious experience in humans depends on brain activity; explaining it requires connecting neural properties with conscious states and contents.
• Functional, computational, and representational theories attempt to explain consciousness through what mental states do, how they are organized, or how they represent objects and states of affairs.
• The field has made progress but lacks agreement about how to identify consciousness across humans, animals, development, and artificial systems.
• A scientific account must address both when a state is conscious and why it has its particular experiential content, while confronting the subjectivity of the evidence.

Dissenting approaches emphasize that objective descriptions of structure, function, and behavior may not capture subjective experience. Some defend a non-physical or fundamental role for consciousness; others remain skeptical that any proposed test or theory can settle whether artificial systems are conscious. Quantum approaches offer additional possibilities, but they are diverse and face both conceptual and empirical challenges.

• The hard problem asks why physical or functional states are accompanied by experience at all, rather than merely explaining their structure, dynamics, or behavioral roles.
• Non-physicalist arguments hold that physical science characterizes entities by behavior and that this may not account for the intrinsic reality of conscious experience.
• Some quantum approaches treat consciousness as arising from quantum brain processes, as illuminated by quantum concepts, or as a dual aspect of an underlying reality.
• A skeptical view argues that experts do not currently know how to determine whether advanced AI systems are conscious, leaving major uncertainty about proposed tests and theories.
• These approaches challenge the assumption that explaining behavior or cognitive function automatically explains phenomenal consciousness.
