Did the Arecibo Message follow any international protocols for METI or consensus from the scientific community?Source
Oct 29, 2026
The Arecibo Message flew before METI had an agreed rulebook; later institutions tried to build one.
Arecibo is best understood as a symbolic demonstration carried out before a formal international framework for METI existed. Later documents distinguish post-detection SETI protocols from rules for sending messages and call for broader consultation. The ordinary institutional reading is therefore straightforward: the broadcast did not rest on a documented global authorization or scientific consensus.
A single telescope spoke for Earth; the next message needs more than a ceremony and a powerful transmitter.
A powerful dish left Earth carrying a portrait of humanity, but no institution had secured humanity's permission to speak. The gap benefits whoever controls the transmitter and defines a symbolic act as harmless; it points toward a future where private or national actors set planetary policy by demonstration. The remaining safeguard is public scrutiny before the next signal.
