Are Malta's cart ruts Roman-era road or quarry tracks rather than prehistoric artifacts?Source

Malta’s cart ruts fit ancient transport and quarry work, but each track still needs its own date.
The strongest ordinary reading is a long-lived transport system developed across several Classical-period phases, including Phoenician, Punic, Roman, and Byzantine use. Roman carts and quarry traffic explain at least some tracks, but the evidence does not assign one date or function to every groove. Their deep cuts and routes into the sea are archaeological problems, not proof of an Ice Age technology.

Roman houses date some ruts. The grooves still refuse a single past, and that is the part grand theories keep cutting away.
Some Maltese ruts run beside Roman houses and roads, while a wider survey places many between about 700 BCE and 870 CE. Their forms vary, and the tracks may record Phoenician, Punic, Roman, Byzantine, or older use. The real mystery is how much history vanishes when we demand one clean answer.
