LSD speeds some brain rhythms, but fractal complexity is not yet a reliable readout of peak experience.
LSD produces a measurable reshuffling of cortical dynamics, not simply a global increase in brain activity. It can speed selected rhythms while reducing their power, and complexity findings are real but method-dependent. Reviews support increased signal diversity, yet subjective intensity does not always align cleanly with averaged EEG or MEG measures.
The brain speeds up, loses rhythmic punch, and grows stranger. The scanner still can’t tell us exactly what that feels like.
Seventeen volunteers showed faster alpha and beta rhythms, weaker oscillatory power, and more fractal signal structure under LSD. That points to a brain being reorganized across timescales, not simply switched off. But dose, timing, and analysis change the result, and complexity does not reliably track the trip. The pattern is promising, not a mind-reading machine.
