Epigenetics can carry environmental effects, but mammalian inheritance still has a steep biological barrier.
Environmental effects can sometimes persist through epigenetic marks, but that is not the same as organisms intentionally directing hereditary change. The strongest evidence comes from plants and simpler organisms; mammals face major reprogramming barriers, and studies have produced inconsistent results. Epigenetics broadens evolutionary biology without restoring Lamarck’s full theory.
Lamarck’s giraffe became a punchline. Epigenetics is bringing back the awkward possibility that life helps edit its own inheritance.
A plant, cell, or embryo can carry an environmental memory forward, even though mammals often erase those marks before the next generation. That narrow finding does not resurrect Lamarck whole, but it cracks the idea of DNA as evolution’s only archive. Life may not just adapt to the world. It may leave instructions for what comes next.
