The Story
The 16mm reel exists as a reported discovery, but its date and connection to Patterson’s film remain to be independently established.
A reel was reportedly found in Norm Johnson’s safe and developed by Marq Evans, revealing a short Bigfoot-like scene that resembles the later film. The ordinary evidentiary reading stops there: the supplied accounts do not provide independent authentication of the date, chain of custody, or direct connection to Roger Patterson’s production.
- The reel was found after Norm Johnson’s death and given to Evans by his daughter, Teresa Brooks.
- Evans reported that the reel contained about 40 seconds of footage resembling the 1967 sequence.
- The supplied material does not document independent authentication of the reel’s date or provenance.
Deeper Insight
If the reel is an earlier trial, the Bigfoot mystery becomes a story about how a convincing image was built and carried through time.
The reel points beneath the creature question to a more concrete possibility: the famous image may have been built through staged experimentation, preserved by people close to the production, and recognized only decades later. If the 1966 dating and resemblance withstand scrutiny, the story would shift the mystery from an encounter in the woods to the making of a cultural icon.
- The reported footage shows a figure and movement pattern similar to the later Patterson–Gimlin film, including a turn toward the camera.
- The documentary presents the reel as footage made before the famous 1967 film, with accounts describing markings or film evidence pointing to 1966.
- Johnson reportedly worked in a Boeing film lab during the period and had connections to people associated with Patterson and Gimlin, giving the provenance claim a specific historical pathway to investigate.
