What caused the 1896–97 phantom airship wave across the United States?Source

Newspapers turned hopes about imminent flight into a moving national story; the reports were real, but the craft remain unidentified.
The wave looks like a collision between technological anticipation and newspaper momentum. Bright lights, balloons, jokes, hoaxes, mistaken observations, and embellished testimony became more elaborate as the story moved from California eastward. Contradictory reports and the abrupt end of the episode weaken the case for one hidden fleet, while leaving individual incidents difficult to reconstruct.

The wave may show mass storytelling at work, but its hardest accounts leave a crack in the public history of flight.
