Newspapers turned hopes about imminent flight into a moving national story; the reports were real, but the craft remain unidentified.
The wave looks like a collision between technological anticipation and newspaper momentum. Bright lights, balloons, jokes, hoaxes, mistaken observations, and embellished testimony became more elaborate as the story moved from California eastward. Contradictory reports and the abrupt end of the episode weaken the case for one hidden fleet, while leaving individual incidents difficult to reconstruct.
The 1896 airship wave turned technological hope into shared evidence. The leftovers say history can hide a machine, or manufacture one.
A dark hull crossing a city under an electric beam was reported by police, judges, railroad workers and crowds before powered flight was publicly established. Newspapers amplified the excitement, while contradictions, hoaxes and imitation spread with it. The wave may show mass storytelling at work, but its hardest accounts leave a crack in the public history of flight.
