Small HIIT studies are useful for detecting signals, but often provide unstable estimates rather than dependable answers. The main hazards are low statistical power, false positives and negatives, multiple outcomes, weak equivalence tests, and poor generalisability. Treat striking benefits as provisional until larger, better-powered studies replicate them under clearly matched protocols.

A critical reading argues that the HIIT literature has sometimes promoted unusually large benefits from evidence that is statistically fragile. It highlights multiple outcomes, underpowered samples, selective interpretation of non-significant results, and claims of superiority or equivalence that the underlying studies were not designed to establish.
