Provenance analysis reconstructs how data or a digital object came to exist by tracking sources, actors, processing steps, transformations, and context. Analysts use these records—or compare multiple files—to assess lineage, reproducibility, dependencies, and possible tampering. Provenance supports evaluation but does not by itself prove truth.

Lens adapted to this topic: What provenance can and cannot establish
A critical view emphasizes that provenance is evidence about history, not an automatic trust score or truth verdict. Records can be incomplete, manipulated, or anchored to an unreliable source; inference from files can remain probabilistic. Security research also questions whether prominent digital-media provenance specifications achieve their stated guarantees. This perspective focuses on gaps, threat models, and the difference between traceability and authenticity.
