Are profiling algorithms quietly creating new historical records that erase inconvenient lives and legitimize novel forms of social power?
The mainstream evidence emphasizes profiling as summarization, inference, and selective persistence. These systems can make large histories usable for personalization or auditing, but should distinguish temporary context from stable preference and expose the sources behind sensitive inferences. Here, “rewriting” mainly means changing representation and retention, not literally changing the past.
Your profile is a history someone else wrote. You can't read it, can't argue with it, and it decides what you're offered next.
Every click, purchase and pause gets compressed into a profile, a short version of you a machine can act on. That version shapes hiring screens, credit and what your feed shows next, and it can carry old prejudice in its math. When it gets you wrong, you may not even have the words to say how. The past is still yours. The record isn't.
