Mechanistic explanations identify components and causal organization; behavioral explanations analyze observable performance, tasks, and patterns. They may answer different questions about the same phenomenon, but scholars disagree over whether behavioral explanations are complementary, autonomous, preliminary, or reducible to mechanisms.

A serious alternative holds that behavioral or functional explanations are not merely incomplete mechanism-talk. They can explain patterns by relating behavior to tasks, environments, purposes, or rules, even when neural details are unavailable or underdetermine the explanation. This view also warns that invoking “mechanisms” can relabel phenomena without identifying how they are produced.
