Project Meridian put defense contractors near decisions about the technologies they sell; the conflict is clear, but intent still needs proof.
Project Meridian was presented as a way to bring outside expertise into Pentagon planning on AI, autonomy, robotics, and other emerging technologies. Musk and Luckey’s companies create an obvious conflict because they could benefit from recommendations about technologies they sell. The available reporting documents that conflict and the lawsuit, but not Hegseth’s personal intent in selecting them.
Project Meridian puts defense sellers inside the Pentagon’s crystal ball. The forecast can start looking like a shopping list.
Nineteen of Project Meridian’s 21 reported participants came from the private sector, including Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey, whose companies already sell military technology. The lawsuit says that setup violates the transparency law meant to keep advisory power balanced. If the people defining tomorrow’s weapons also stand to sell them, public planning starts to look like private rule.
