Fermi Paradox

Fermi asked where everybody was. He never said nobody was there; the paradox got pinned on him afterward.

The paradox sounds airtight: so many stars, so much time, so where is everyone? Robert Gray, who went back to the record, says Fermi asked the question but never called the silence a contradiction. Our searches are young and narrow, and a civilization might be signaling in a form we don't recognize as a signal. The silence may be ours.

• What it could changeTreating silence as a gap in our searching rather than an answer would reopen the question of who is out there.
• How it touches todaySearches still listen on a short list of channels, the ones we guessed aliens would use.
• Our futureWe may already be surrounded by messages we have not learned to read.

• Robert Gray argues that Fermi reportedly asked where everybody was but did not claim that extraterrestrial intelligence was absent or that its absence was paradoxical.seti +1
• The strongest inference from current searches is narrow: no civilization has been conclusively recognized through the searched channels, not that civilizations do not exist.exa
• Some critics argue that non-detection constrains a chain of assumptions about manifestation, propagation, observation, and recognition rather than any one factor alone.exa +1
