The Story
FBI agents fear election interference, but no nationwide 2026 seizure order has been publicly confirmed.
The immediate story is an internal warning, not proof of an issued order. Seven people familiar with FBI discussions described fears that agents could be sent to polling places or directed to pursue weak fraud allegations. Reporting also documents prior seizures, while the public record still lacks a confirmed nationwide operational plan.

- Why it mattersSeizing election materials or deploying agents could disrupt voting, counting, or certification.

Deeper Insight
Fulton County's ballots were seized on fraud claims already debunked, and no charges followed. Agents now fear it won't be the last time.
The FBI, the U.S. domestic law enforcement agency, seized Fulton County ballots and records on a warrant built from fraud claims that had already been debunked, and no charges followed. Now people familiar with internal talks say agents fear orders to seize ballots or show up at polls. The Brennan Center calls it a playbook: unfounded claims become official seizures, and trust in the count drains.
- What it could changeIf seizures become routine, the count would move from local officials in public view to federal agents behind warrants.
- How it touches todayThe DNC is already suing for DOJ and FBI records about possible plans to seize ballots and machines.
- Our futureElections could be settled after the votes are counted, by whoever holds the boxes.
- The Brennan Center describes a recurring playbook in which unfounded fraud claims become the basis for official seizures of election records, undermining confidence and draining law-enforcement resources.
- The Fulton County warrant relied on already-debunked claims, and the FBI seizure produced no reported criminal charges in the cited account.
- The DNC lawsuit seeks DOJ and FBI records about possible plans to seize ballots, machines, or election materials, but the lawsuit itself does not prove such a plan exists.
