Enceladus has the ingredients for life, but its plume chemistry still has more than one author.
Enceladus offers a compelling habitat, not a confirmed ecosystem. Cassini’s methane and hydrogen fit methanogenesis especially well, but hydrothermal reactions, freezing, and radiation can also make organic compounds. The ordinary scientific reading is therefore disciplined: the plume justifies life-detection missions, while its chemistry alone cannot identify native microbes.
The plume is not a life detector. It is a cosmic chemistry trap.
Cassini’s plume carries complex organics, methane, and hydrogen, while labs can make similar compounds without microbes. At pH 11–12, Enceladus’s ocean may still host methanogens, but chemistry alone cannot tell life from geology or radiation. The next mission must sample smarter. Earth’s biological monopoly deserves a real test.
