Does the UK actually lack layered ground-based air defenses to stop mass drone and missile attacks?Source

The UK has a real, integrated defence architecture rather than an empty sky: radar, fighters, naval systems, land-based missiles and NATO cooperation. However, official and expert-oriented assessments also recognise that coverage is selective and that the country lacks a comprehensive ballistic-missile shield. The practical question is whether existing layers can protect priority sites against a complex mass attack, not whether they can intercept any threat at all.
The stronger critical reading is that ‘multi-layered’ can overstate the protection available in practice. Critics point to long-term underinvestment, limited numbers of interceptors and platforms, and insufficient homeland coverage. On this view, a mass raid combining cheap drones with cruise or ballistic missiles could saturate or bypass the forces available, leaving the government to defend selected military and strategic targets rather than the population as a whole.
