Does increased cellular autophagy in elders sometimes indicate dysfunctional ageing rather than health benefit?Source

Autophagy is generally viewed as a protective maintenance system, and impaired flux is a plausible contributor to ageing and age-related disease. However, current evidence does not justify treating every increase as beneficial: ageing-related changes vary by tissue and cell type, while elevated markers may indicate either increased throughput or a downstream processing bottleneck. The key issue is completed flux, not activity inferred from one readout.
A more skeptical reading treats elevated autophagy in elders as a possible stress signature or failed cleanup response rather than proof of resilience. In this view, senescent or diseased cells may activate autophagy to meet abnormal metabolic demands, while stalled lysosomal processing causes vesicle accumulation. The evidence is strongest as a warning against equating higher measured activity with better ageing, not as proof that increases are generally harmful.
