El Gordo is an extreme but modellable cluster collision; its rarity does not by itself prove dark matter collides.
El Gordo is a rare, massive merger whose unusual mass, redshift, and collision speed put pressure on some ΛCDM simulations. That pressure does not by itself select self-interacting dark matter: conventional hydrodynamical models reproduce key X-ray and dynamical features, while the inferred tension changes with revised mass and velocity estimates.
El Gordo's displaced mass components may be the first sharp sign that dark matter itself can collide.
The deeper reading treats El Gordo as a laboratory for dark matter's own behavior. Simulations with elastic self-interactions reproduce offsets between mass components, and newer two-state models add an inelastic channel to match weak-lensing constraints. These results make self-interaction a concrete physical explanation, but they remain simulation-based evidence for possibility, not a unique proof.
