DMT can make an unfamiliar world feel remembered, but the studies show the feeling, not a prior visit.
DMT radically changes perception, self-awareness, memory, and the sense of place. Familiarity can then appear as a powerful recognition signal attached to a novel scene, not necessarily as recall of an actual prior visit. The available studies document the pattern, but do not yet identify the brain mechanism that produces it.
When an alien place feels like home, recognition becomes a doorway, and no one yet knows what lies beyond it.
A room that feels like home before it has ever been seen turns déjà vu into more than a memory glitch: it exposes how quickly the mind can make recognition feel like knowledge. Bergson’s split between present perception and memory gives the experience a philosophical shape, while the reports leave open whether “returning” is an interpretation layered onto altered consciousness or a clue to something deeper.
