i've always been fascinated by derinkuyu in turkey (that massive underground city carved 18 stories deep into solid rock that could hold 20,000 people) and the official history says primitive locals carved it with hand tools just to hide from raiders, which never really made sense to me considering it has deep ventilation shafts and giant rolling stone doors that only bolt from the inside you don'
