Dark Forest theory: are advanced civilizations hiding because discovery guarantees destruction, or so a rising minority of futurists now warn?
The theory is treated as an imaginative, logically structured hypothesis rather than a demonstrated description of the cosmos. It starts from the Fermi paradox and models silence as a consequence of fear, uncertainty, light-speed communication limits, and possible first-strike advantages. Mainstream treatments emphasize that the absence of signals does not identify which explanation is correct.
The dark forest assumes aliens think like frightened humans. With whole asteroids to mine, maybe nobody needs to shoot first.
Liu Cixin, the Chinese science fiction writer, made the idea famous: the galaxy is quiet because everyone is hiding from everyone else. The rebuttal goes after the premise. With whole asteroids to mine, there may be nothing worth fighting over, and peace pays. The theory might say more about us than about aliens, and about what we would do with a loaded gun in the dark.
