Optogenetics can reshape memory-linked circuits in mice, but reliable erasure or implantation of specific human memories has not been demonstrated.
Optogenetics has shown precise control over memory-linked circuits in mice, especially the emotional valence attached to a memory. Human use would require solving invasive delivery, cell targeting, whole-brain memory representation, durability, and safety problems; existing reviews report inconsistent clinical translation rather than reliable erasure or implantation.

If human memory circuits become individually addressable, trauma treatment could shift from suppressing symptoms to rewriting what the past means.
A future ability to address and rewrite selected components of experience would be more than a cinematic delete key. Animal work already shows that a labelled memory circuit can be driven and its emotional meaning reversed; if human neurons could be addressed with comparable precision, therapy might replace fear with safety or construct targeted associations. That possibility remains an engineering horizon, not a demonstrated human capability.
