The Story
Canada investigated unusual sightings, but the files show fragmented fact-finding rather than proof of extraterrestrial craft.
The files show a Cold War-era system that treated unusual sightings first as possible security matters, then as scientific or administrative problems. DND and the RCMP collected reports and investigated selected cases, but the broader record was passive, fragmented, and short on resources. Official attention demonstrates monitoring, not confirmation of extraterrestrial craft.
- Cold War concerns about possible Soviet technology helped drive early Canadian interest in UFO reports.
- Project Magnet and Project Second Storey were official investigations, but the government later concluded the subject did not lend itself to a scientific method of investigation.
- The RCMP and Canadian Forces investigated the 1967 Shag Harbour incident, while DND records include intelligence files on unidentified objects.

Deeper Insight
Canada logged about 9,500 UFO records across defence, the RCMP and transport. No agency ever owned the question.
A citizen's sighting could land in an RCMP report, a defence file or a science office, and stop there. Library and Archives Canada now holds roughly 9,500 of those records, nearly 4,500 sightings, including radar incidents and an RCMP officer's own report in Nova Scotia. The system kept collecting and never built a lasting investigation. Filing a mystery without owning it is a choice.
- What it could changeOne agency with a mandate to follow up would turn Canada's archive from a pile of reports into an investigation.
- How it touches todayThe searchable archive now lets anyone read the cases agencies left open.
- Our futureOther governments' scattered files may hide the same pattern, waiting for someone to put them together.
- The archive’s scale, roughly 9,500 documents from multiple agencies, shows sustained collection rather than a single centralized UFO program.
- The historical record describes thousands of pages and nearly 4,500 sightings gathered through a largely passive, disconnected system.
- The files include reports involving qualified personnel, unusual radar observations, and an RCMP officer’s reported sighting in Nova Scotia, while still leaving cases unexplained.
