The strongest mainstream reading is that gut–brain biology is plausible and increasingly supported, but human evidence has not yet demonstrated that a specific bacterium directly accelerates brain aging. Associations with brain-age measures, amyloid, inflammation, and cognition are consistent with causal pathways, while animal and genetic-metabolite studies provide supporting mechanistic evidence.

A serious skeptical interpretation emphasizes that most human findings are observational, microbiome measurements are variable, and brain aging can itself change diet, activity, medication use, and gut ecology. Apparent mediation may therefore reflect shared causes or reverse causation. Mechanistic animal results are informative but may not translate to human aging.
