Some human studies link gut microbial profiles or metabolites with brain-age, amyloid, inflammation, and cognition markers, but association does not establish that bacteria initiate or accelerate brain aging. Genetic analyses and animal experiments strengthen the causal case for particular metabolites, yet direct human intervention evidence remains limited.

Lens adapted to this topic: Causal skepticism
A serious skeptical interpretation emphasizes that most human findings are observational, microbiome measurements are variable, and brain aging can itself change diet, activity, medication use, and gut ecology. Apparent mediation may therefore reflect shared causes or reverse causation. Mechanistic animal results are informative but may not translate to human aging.
