Rituals change anxiety, brain responses, and social bonding — but not external luck, critics say.
Summary
Rituals can produce measurable effects when they regulate anxiety, structure attention, shape expectations, or coordinate groups. Experimental and field studies report changes in anxiety, neural responses, perceived efficacy, physiological arousal, social bonding, and pain-related outcomes. This view does not require supernatural causation, and it treats effects as conditional rather than guaranteed.
- A preregistered study of 268 Czech students found ritualized action modestly improved anxiety reduction after an anxiety induction, with clearer physiological differences among more anxiety-susceptible participants.
- A preregistered experiment reported that rituals reduced the neural response associated with performance failure.
- A series of experiments reported that rituals reduced anxiety and improved performance in public and private performance settings.

Deeper Insight
A skeptical reading accepts that rituals may change reported feelings or behavior, but questions how large, durable, and reproducible those effects are. It distinguishes psychological benefits from claims that rituals alter external luck or events, and emphasizes failed replications, retractions, and the possibility that expectancy or study design explains some findings.
- The evidence does not support rituals changing luck or external events through magic; any plausible effects are psychological, behavioral, or social.
- A prominent lucky-object performance finding failed to replicate in larger follow-up studies, prompting concerns about reproducibility of ritual-related performance effects.
- The 2022 anxiety study found only a slight advantage for ritualized action over control and no-activity conditions, limiting claims about large effects.
