Nanoscale electrical sensing has shown that individual amino acids can be detected and their handedness distinguished, including in meteorite and desert-soil extracts. However, reliable in-situ extraterrestrial use is not yet established: sample complexity, calibration, gap stability, contamination, and the biological meaning of enantiomeric excess remain significant uncertainties.

Lens adapted to this topic: Optimistic technology case
A more optimistic reading sees single-molecule electrical platforms as unusually well suited to constrained planetary missions: they can be compact, sensitive, label-free, and capable of distinguishing enantiomers without the elaborate isolation or derivatization associated with some conventional methods. Recent demonstrations suggest that practical reliability may improve rapidly, although biosignature interpretation still requires corroboration.
