California’s counterculture helped make radical ideas about human futures discussable; AI safety turned some of those ideas into a technical research agenda.
Identifiable people, communities, and institutions trace the connection. Countercultural spirituality encouraged experimentation and personal transformation; cyberculture moved those habits into computing; later organizations translated existential concern into AI-safety research. The record supports influence and continuity, but not a single unified movement or a direct line from Marin and San Francisco enclaves to every current AI doctrine.

Druid Heights’ self-transformation ethic traveled through Whole Earth cyberculture into transhumanism, then AI-safety research.
At Druid Heights, spiritual seekers treated human limits as editable. Through the Whole Earth tradition and Bay Area cyberculture, that habit moved into computing. Leary’s SMI2LE then linked enhancement to emerging technology, while AI-safety institutions turned catastrophe into a research problem. The inheritance is real, but power decides who gets to edit the future.
