The Story
Alien visitors could bring knowledge or danger; humanity has no evidence yet showing which kind would arrive.
Cox’s reassurance is a philosophical response to cosmic loneliness, not a forecast of alien behavior. The ordinary scientific reading is that humanity has no data on extraterrestrial intentions, and any encounter could range from helpful to harmful. The safest conclusion is uncertainty: benevolence cannot be inferred from advanced technology or a civilization’s decision to visit.
- No extraterrestrial intelligence has been observed, so there is no empirical basis for estimating whether visitors would be benevolent.
- Contact analyses examine a broad range of beneficial, neutral, and harmful scenarios rather than assuming one outcome.
- Some analyses argue that an encounter may involve robotic or artificial systems rather than biological beings like humans.

Deeper Insight
Alien company could calm the loneliness. It could also rewrite the rules of our future.
Cox sees a nearby civilization as a relief from humanity’s lonely duty to preserve intelligence and meaning. But contact would open more than a cosmic group chat. It could place our future beside a civilization with radically greater power and no shared moral rules. The question would become who gets a say in what intelligence becomes.
- Cox’s hope rests on the idea that other civilizations would relieve humanity of being solely responsible for intelligence’s future, not on evidence about alien conduct.
- Research on extraterrestrial altruism explores mechanisms for advanced altruism, reciprocity, empathy, and interspecies ethics as possibilities rather than observed facts.
- Ethical and safety analyses warn that humanity cannot predict extraterrestrial intentions and should weigh potential benefits against risks before initiating contact.

Professor Brian Cox opened up about why he would find the presence of aliens reassuring. "I would absolutely love that because given what you said, I feel **it would take a weight off our shoulders"** "When we talk about the universe as a whole, there is a really important pri
