Alien visitors could bring knowledge or danger; humanity has no evidence yet showing which kind would arrive.
Cox’s reassurance is a philosophical response to cosmic loneliness, not a forecast of alien behavior. The ordinary scientific reading is that humanity has no data on extraterrestrial intentions, and any encounter could range from helpful to harmful. The safest conclusion is uncertainty: benevolence cannot be inferred from advanced technology or a civilization’s decision to visit.

It could place our future beside a civilization with radically greater power and no shared moral rules. The question would become who gets a say in what intelligence becomes.
