Are synchronicities signs of a hidden, nonphysical agency ordering events around personal meaning?
The naturalistic reading distinguishes the experience of meaningfulness from evidence that an external agent arranged events. Coincidences may seem causal because humans detect patterns and significance, while causal pathways may be hidden, distributed, delayed, social, or technologically mediated. On this view, anecdotes are insufficient to establish agency, and one source explicitly reports no scientific evidence supporting synchronicity.
The psychologist Jung said meaningful coincidences need no cause. If he was right, meaning is built into reality, not painted on by us.
You think of an old friend and the phone rings. The standard answer is pattern-seeking plus chance. Jung proposed something stranger: an acausal order, where what happens inside you and what happens outside line up because they belong together, not because one pushed the other. A purely causal world has no room for destiny. Maybe that says more about the model than about destiny.
