The Story
Fairy rings grow from fungi, while the reported tunnels and holes remain stories tied to memorable places.
The places and the stories attached to them are best treated separately. Fairy rings have documented fungal causes, while holes and tunnels can become focal points for local legend. Historical and contemporary accounts preserve what people reported or believed, but the sources provide no independently verified transit into Fairyland.
- Fungi form fairy rings through outward-growing underground mycelium, producing mushroom circles or altered grass patterns.
- A reported hole near Bawdeswell became linked in local tradition to St Martin’s Land, but the account describes hearsay and says the hole was filled.
- Folklore records fairyland journeys and missing time as narrative motifs, not as verified evidence of physical portals.
Deeper Insight
A fairy portal is the old promise that an ordinary patch of earth can still open into a larger world.
An ordinary patch of earth can become charged with the possibility of another world. Fairy rings, stone circles, banks, holes, and thorn tunnels recur because they mark thresholds: places where boundaries seem thin and where stories of invitation, danger, disappearance, and changed time can take hold. That meaning is well documented even when the passage itself remains a matter of testimony.
- The originating thread names fairy rings and deep briar or thornbush tunnels as reported routes, alongside invitations, fairy food, changed time, and accidental crossings.
- Folkloric sources repeatedly identify distinctive landscape features—banks, stones, holes, and isolated places—as settings for encounters with fairy beings.
- The Rollright Stones preserve stories of fairies entering and leaving through a hole, showing how monumental sites can become enduring portal locations.

These are mushroom rings that are believed to be doorways to their realm. You're not suppose to step inside them. Another lesser known one is deep briar/thornbush "tunnels." If you've seen Coraline, in the movie she finds a crawlspace door
