Planarians can learn and retain behavioral traces after injury, but that does not yet establish conscious memory in cells.
Planarians clearly show regeneration and can display conditioning, habituation and other memory-related behaviors. The cautious reading treats these as biological learning processes involving neural, chemical and physiological mechanisms, while keeping “intelligence,” “memory” and especially consciousness as definitions requiring careful testing. The dramatic cannibalism-transfer claim remains unsupported by reliable replication.
Levin’s biobots, living cell-built constructs, suggest intelligence is scattered through living matter, not locked in brains.
A headless planarian can still show memory-related behavior after regeneration, while Michael Levin says bioelectric networks can steer groups of cells toward anatomical goals. The evidence supports distributed control, not consciousness. But if tissues can be taught what to build, medicine may move from replacing parts to speaking with living matter.
