Can evolution alone account for consciousness and rationality as Nagel argues?Source

Evolution can shape truth-seeking minds without settling every question about what experience is.
Evolution can explain how cognitive capacities are shaped by selection, even if the subjective character of experience remains philosophically difficult. Nagel’s challenge is powerful against reductionism, but the opposing view holds that he demands an explanation of consciousness and reason that evolutionary biology was never designed to provide.
If reason and experience are basic features of nature, evolution may be the history of mind, not its whole explanation.
A mind looking out at the world is not captured simply by a map of neurons and selection pressures. Nagel’s deeper point is that reason must trust the very evolutionary story used to explain it, while consciousness and value appear to outrun physical description. The open possibility is not necessarily God, but a richer nature with mind or teleology built in.

Can Evolution Explain Consciousness and Reason? | Thomas Nagel
Video
*Could mind and matter emerge from something more fundamental than either?* Thomas Nagel revisits the arguments of Mind and Cosmos, questioning whether evolutionary materialism can fully explain consciousness, rationality, and objective value. He considers teleology, the limits of reductionism, and speculative alternatives in which the potential for consciousness may be built into reality itself.
