The Pentagon says the office serves every faith; its policies, budgets, and treatment of nonbelievers will show whether that promise holds.
An administrative upgrade for military chaplains need not become a license to impose belief. The Pentagon says the office will provide religious support across the force without compelling participation or favoring one faith. The real test is whether its budgets, programs, symbols, and spiritual-readiness measures apply that promise evenly.
Hegseth’s shortcut to chaplains can turn “spiritual readiness” into a Christian loyalty test for the force.
A new office puts the Armed Forces Chaplains Board and spiritual-readiness programs under Hegseth’s direct line. The Pentagon promises equal treatment, but reported changes include cutting recognized religions from more than 200 to 30 and replacing chaplain rank insignia with religious symbols. The test is whether non-Christian service members keep equal standing.
