Does consciousness originate in the upper brainstem rather than the cortex?Source

Upper-brainstem arousal and feeling matter, but the cortex still helps build the conscious world humans experience.
Upper-brainstem networks help sustain wakefulness and affect, while cortical and thalamocortical circuits organize the rich contents of perception, thought, and self-awareness. Clinical cases challenge a cortex-only account, but they do not by themselves settle whether feeling can exist independently of broader brain networks.
A child with little cortex can still giggle. If feeling comes from the upper brainstem, thought is the late arrival.
A child with little cortex can still giggle or startle. Mark Solms argues that raw feeling begins in the upper brainstem, before thought, vision, or self-awareness. If that holds, consciousness is less a crown worn by the cortex than a pulse of feeling shared across animals and perhaps machines. The search for mind starts beneath thought.
