The D-Wave model performed well in a small test, but dependable lung-cancer screening needs independent clinical validation.
The result is a promising technical demonstration, not a validated diagnostic tool. The dataset was small, class-balanced, and augmented with synthetic records, while broader research warns that performance can fall under severe class imbalance and that larger, heterogeneous datasets and real hardware require further validation.
D-Wave's 91.90% came from 108 balanced training examples. The real breakthrough would be useful medicine without a data empire.
A 309-record lung-cancer dataset became 540 after synthetic examples were added, and a D-Wave model reached 91.90% on quantum hardware. That is a promising test of learning with limited data, not a clinical guarantee. The bigger prize is medicine that works beyond the clean dataset, across different hospitals and patients.
