The Story
China’s orbital spaceplane is real and capable, but its payload and purpose remain undisclosed.
The DIA image is strong evidence that the vehicle is a real, reusable orbital spacecraft rather than a concept illustration. Its X-37B-like layout supports a spaceplane role, while observed launches, long-duration missions, orbit changes, and proximity operations show meaningful capability. The evidence still stops short of identifying its payloads, military purpose, or exact Chinese model.
- What is establishedThe craft has operated in orbit, survived extended missions, changed orbit, and appears designed for runway recovery and payload handling.
- What remains unknownThe sources do not establish whether the pictured vehicle is Shenlong, another design, or a direct functional equivalent of the X-37B.
- The DIA image shows a winged Chinese spacecraft with features consistent with an orbital reusable vehicle and closely matching the X-37B’s configuration.
- Experts assess the spacecraft as likely testing dual-use technology, including possible inspection, retrieval, or manipulation of satellites.
- The spacecraft has raised its orbit during missions and conducted orbital operations, demonstrating more than a purely conceptual design.

Deeper Insight
A DIA image shows China's spaceplane in orbit after it released an object and maneuvered around it. Orbit now has two secret shuttles.
The image, from the commercial satellite firm Vantor, shows wings, payload-bay doors and landing-gear bays on a Chinese spacecraft in orbit. It is a close match for the X-37B, the U.S. uncrewed reusable mini-shuttle. Observers have watched it change orbits, release an object and maneuver near it, the moves of a vehicle built for close work in space. Neither side says what that work is.
- What it could changeTwo powers flying secret, reusable craft that can approach other objects turns orbit into a place for close-quarters games.
- How it touches todayProximity operations near released objects are the kind of activity militaries watch most closely.
- Our futureThe next standoff may play out quietly in orbit, with the public seeing only the photographs.
- The vehicle’s observed release of an object and subsequent maneuvering near it is consistent with rendezvous or proximity operations, though the object’s purpose is unknown.
- The DIA image shows a design with payload-bay doors and a rear service module, features that point to a vehicle built for more than simple atmospheric reentry.
- Earlier claims about China’s spaceplane program were sometimes based on weak or duplicated evidence, making the new orbital image a significant shift in the quality of publicly available evidence.

U.S. Intel Confirms This Is China’s Secret Spaceplane
News reporting
The U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) has confirmed that an image that has been circulating online for years does indeed show an experimental Chinese reusable spaceplane in orbit. A newly released higher-resolution copy of the image underscores that the design is nearly a dead ringer for the X-37B miniature space shuttles now operated by the U.S. Space Force . DIA included the higher-resoluti
