Planet Nine is a distant, several-Earth-mass planet on an elongated orbit shepherding detached Kuiper Belt objects.
The hypothesis emerged from numerical modeling of distant Kuiper Belt objects whose orbital orientations appear unusually clustered, whose perihelia can be detached from Neptune, and whose dynamics are difficult to explain using only the known planets. A distant, eccentric, several-Earth-mass planet could shepherd these objects through long-term gravitational interactions. The central limitation is decisive: the object remains unseen.
Planet Nine, the proposed unseen planet, may be hiding in our blind spot. The pattern could belong to our telescopes, not the sky.
A handful of distant Kuiper Belt objects seem to point the same way, so models conjure a 5–10-Earth-mass planet far beyond Neptune. But those objects came from uneven surveys, and the clustering may reflect where telescopes looked. Planet Nine is a reminder that our maps can manufacture worlds before the sky confirms them.
