The Hawara Labyrinth hides a larger, misplaced mortuary complex beneath modern Fayum fields.
The strongest archaeological identification places the Labyrinth at Hawara as Amenemhat III’s large mortuary and cult complex. Its galleries, courtyards, and administrative or ritual functions likely inspired the Greek name, while later destruction and incomplete documentation explain why the site cannot be reconstructed with certainty.
Hawara’s underground anomalies make the missing map more than a mystery. They give the buried past new power over the story told above it.
Regular shapes appear beneath the ruins beside Amenemhat III’s pyramid, while ancient writers described a maze of courts and chambers. Destruction erased the map, leaving radar, ruins, and old accounts to pull Hawara in different directions. The buried past is not only hidden. It is still competing to define what Egypt was.
