Biometric mass surveillance is not just privacy erosion but a new infrastructure for sorting and governing populations.
Biometric mass surveillance is best understood as large-scale, often remote identification or tracking using bodily or behavioural features. The defining issue is not biometrics alone, but deployment across public life without prior suspicion or meaningful choice. European policy analysis treats the technology as raising distinctive ethical and legal concerns involving privacy, profiling, bodily integrity, and automated decision-making.
Facial recognition turns a face into a tracking pass. Once anonymity is gone, public life belongs to whoever owns the database.
A camera in a public square can scan faces, classify people, and track them without suspicion or consent. The system may mistake bodies and burden marginalized groups, but even a perfect match changes the bargain: walking outside becomes a silent permission slip for permanent monitoring.
